Ending on a good note

There's lots said about wrapping up a school year and the stress. A buzz that is almost heard ringing throughout the schoolyard beckons students to act without regard to previously established norms. It seems the count down begins the day standardized testing ends (another dirty word).

I don't count down; I don't want to. I like to enjoy the final days with my students and counting down seems like looking forward to the end. Realistically, I know the end is nearing and how much time is left to cover what material, but I've had that framework in basic essence formed for awhile. The last week isn't about cramming, it's a continued process set up throughout the year.
Students should be prepared for the next grade not because they crammed for the final but because they developed an understanding of material throughout the course. In this manner, they will take the knowledge and the skills with them.
The last week should be about reassuring the students that they are prepared and helping them demonstrate their skills building the confidence they need to be successful.

End the year positive, they'll remember it more than the cool teacher who showed the movie.
