Using scales and rubrics to assess student work for all subjects for all forms of assignments is just good teaching practice. I am in my twelfth year of teaching junior high language arts and math, and I acknowledge that I do not have all the answers. However, utilizing this same evaluation tool throughout an entire standard or goal allows students to see how they will be analyzing their progress. Designing materials for both subjects with this tool in mind and adapting course material and assessments to fit this concept has been a major mind shift and it is truly exciting and beneficial.
Critiquing answers for understanding and providing feedback based on a pre-made scale is much more validating than a checkmark or star. Teaching students to critique their own work in this manner provides them with analysis skills and a deeper understanding of the concept.
Recently, students had to not only rate their own advertisements they created to support a claim on a scale, but they had to use verbiage from the scale rating they gave themself with evidence to support why they deserved that rating to prove they earned it. The students were putting to use the very concept they were showcasing from the goal! They did exceptionally well, and students who felt they had not meet the goal wanted to go back to their product and make revisions, which was allowed, even though their current scale score is recorded. Consistent work with the scales and in depth understanding that they are being held accountable to them is proving to be a success for this Gweniepig!
