When I took the assessment back to the group, we discussed the scaling and self assessment process again. The students were excited to see that for the most part I agreed with them and they were inspired to work towards mastery.
We went through a re-teaching process using a computer representation rather than a hands on concrete material which provided them a new angle with the material. The students were willing to work through the problem if needed. Many students were able to further their understanding even if they had already mastered the previous step. We will see how the next assessment goes.
For now open communication and allowing for space to grow has been a success.
